United Church Plant Sale

Our online sale is now closed.  Perennials, pies and biscotti ordered before the sale closed on April 26th will be ready for pick up at the church parking lot on Saturday, May 9th between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM.

Our In-Person Plant Sale will be held on Saturday, May 16th from 9:00 AM to noon at the church.  You will find a variety of annuals, sourced from Paquette’s Nursery in Williston, and a selection of perennials, several not available for the online sale.

Information about your plants:
Perennials:  Most were dug from area gardens and potted in light potting soil.  Some were dug just before the pick up date to allow them to get a better start, and wrapped in damp newsprint ready for planting directly into your gardens.  The roots of all plants were thoroughly washed prior to potting or wrapping.  Plant your new plants at your earliest convenience and be sure to keep them well-watered until you get them in the ground.  A huge thank you to GUY'S FARM AND YARD for donating potting soil, which helps to keep our costs down and our prices low.

Annuals:  We recommend planting after all danger of frost is passed or covered if the temperatures threaten to go low.

A few planting tips:
  • In general, plant these perennials to the same depth that they are planted in their pots.  Occasionally the soil settles after we pot and water them, so if any plants show white on the stems or if their roots show above the soil line, plant them a little deeper.
  • Bearded Iris, which will be delivered bare root, should be planted with the top of the rhizome showing above soil level.  If they are planted deeper, the leaves will grow but the plant will not bloom.
  • KEEP THEM WELL-WATERED!  They should be kept moist for the first several weeks to allow them to establish their roots.
  • Try to plant them in areas of your gardens that match the sun/shade needs listed on our online store (to access click the Locally Grown Perennials image).
  • If possible, plant your new plants on cloudy or rainy days to help them begin to get established before they have to deal with bright sunshine.
  • If you bought peonies, we recommend digging the hole where you want them to be, setting the pot and plant into the hole, and filling in dirt around it.  In the fall, take the pot out of the ground, remove the peony, and plant it in the hole.  Firm the dirt around the outside and they should be all set to go.
  • Have fun!  Enjoy the colors and textures that your new plants add to your garden.  Spread the beauty!
Final note:
We encourage you to return the pots that your perennials came in; we will reuse them next year.  You may leave them by the basement door behind the church.  We also accept gallon, half-gallon, and quart pots that do not have identifying names on them; please do not leave any other size or type of pots.
