Wetland Restoration Project
Background
In 2019 a planning group, which included church members, was formed to address the need to mitigate some of the storm water issues the town was experiencing, including the flooding behind the church which washed out the playground area. Storm water from several residential developments and businesses and a portion of Route 116 drains into a ditch just north of the church and then into the LaPlatte River (which drains into Lake Champlain at Shelburne Bay). At one time the area behind the church was part of a large wetland complex before being converted to agriculture and then into playing fields.
The Lewis Creek Association (LCA) joined the planning group in 2020 and was instrumental in applying for and receiving two grants to fund design work for a wetland restoration that will allow water to flow through a more natural channel behind the church. The water will spread out into wetlands, which will be planted with native species, then move on to the LaPlatte River. With the design work completed (to view the plan click here), the LCA received a construction grant and a contract for the work was signed. In preparation for the construction, the playground structure has been taken down and stored behind the Parish House.
On June 28, 2023 WCAX interviewed Kate Kelly, Lewis Creek Association Program Manager, about the project. To view the interview, click here

Construction of the wetland was planned for the summer and fall of 2023 but due to the flooding events over the summer the work was delayed. It is expected to begin in July, 2024.
